How to create custom folders

Primo Ramdisk provides two methods to automatically create custom folders on the virtual disk at startup.

Method 1: Create a Small Number of Root Directory Folders (≤ 10)

  1. Create or modify a virtual disk to open the Disk Configuration dialog.
  2. Click the File System Settings button. If not visible, click Go to Advanced Mode first.
  3. In the pop-up dialog, switch to the Advanced tab.
  4. Check the Automatically Create Custom Folders option.
  5. In the text box below, double-click a blank area and enter your desired folder names (one per line, maximum 10).

These folders will be automatically created in the virtual disk's root directory at every startup.
This method does not rely on image file functionality and is supported in all Primo Ramdisk editions (including Standard Edition).

Important Notice:
If the virtual disk also has an image file enabled, the image file's contents will overwrite the empty folders created by this method at startup.

Method 2: Create Numerous Folders or Subfolders (Using Image File)

Use this method to create more than 10 folders or complex directory structures with subfolders.
Note: Primo Ramdisk Standard does not support image files; therefore, this method is unavailable in Standard Edition.

  1. Create or modify a virtual disk. In the Disk Configuration dialog:

    • Check Backing Image.
    • (Optional) Modify the pre-filled image file path/name in the input box.
(Software auto-generates the image file; manual creation is unnecessary.)
  2. Click the Image Settings button. If not visible, click Go to Advanced Mode first.

  3. In the Image Settings dialog:

    • Select an Image Format (Flat Image or Compact Image).
    • Under Save Mode, uncheck all options (e.g., Save at Shutdown, Timing Save).
This prevents automatic image modification, ensuring the initial state loads at every startup.

  4. Click OK to apply image settings, then click Create (new disk) or OK (modify disk) in the Disk Configuration dialog.

  5. Build the directory structure:

    • Open Windows File Explorer.

    • Navigate to the virtual disk (typically R: or your assigned drive letter).

    • Manually create all required folders and subfolder structures. You may also add initial files.

  6. Save the initial structure to the image:

    • Return to the Primo Ramdisk main dialog.

    • Click the Save Image button  on the toolbar.

    • In the pop-up dialog, select Update the associated image file.

    • Click Save.

After completing these steps, Primo Ramdisk will load your saved image file into the virtual disk at every system startup, automatically initializing the disk with your predefined directory structure. Because image auto-save is disabled, all changes made to the virtual disk during use will be lost after reboot, restoring the disk to the state of your last manual image save.

To update the initial directory structure or file content:

  1. Ensure the virtual disk is in your desired target state (with updated folders/files).

  2. Click the Save Image button in the Primo Ramdisk main dialog again.

  3. Select Update the associated image file and click Save.

  4. The updated directory structure will be applied at the next startup.
