What to Do If a Blue Screen Occurs During Startup?

If you encounter a blue screen error during computer startup while installing or using PrimoCache, you can try the following methods to recover your system.

Method 1: Remove the Level-2 Cache Device

If you have enabled a cache task with a Level-2 cache and the L2 cache device can be physically removed from your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Disconnect the Level-2 cache device.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. If the system starts successfully, open PrimoCache, modify the corresponding cache task to disable the Level-2 cache, or delete the entire cache task.
  5. Shut down the computer again, reconnect the Level-2 cache device, and then restart the computer.
  6. Open PrimoCache, navigate to the Level-2 Storage Management dialog, and delete all listed Level-2 Storage partitions on this device to release the level-2 cache space.
  7. After completing these steps, you can reconfigure the device as a Level-2 cache for cache tasks.

Method 2: Boot into Safe Mode

PrimoCache is designed to disable all cache tasks in Safe Mode. Therefore, you can try booting the system into Safe Mode.
  1. Access the "Advanced Boot Options" menu. Please refer to: How to Access the Advanced Boot Options When Windows Fails to Boot.
  2. Select Safe Mode.
  3. If you successfully enter the system, uninstall PrimoCache while in Safe Mode.
  4. Restart the computer to boot into normal mode.

Method 3: Disable Driver Signature Enforcement

If a blue screen occurs during the first restart after installing PrimoCache, or after a major Windows version update, try the following steps:
  1. Access the "Advanced Boot Options" menu.  Please refer to: How to Access the Advanced Boot Options When Windows Fails to Boot.
  2. Select Disable driver signature enforcement.
  3. If the system starts successfully, uninstall PrimoCache after entering the system.
  4. Restart the computer normally.

Method 4: Edit the Registry in Windows RE or from Another Computer

If the above methods fail to start the system, but you can access Windows RE (refer to How to Access the Recovery Environment When Windows Fails to Start), or connect the original system drive to another working computer, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Registry Editor.
If you are in the Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. Then, in the Command Prompt window that appears, type regedit.exe and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and then click File -> Load Hive... from the menu.
  3. Locate and select the registry hive file from the original Windows partition: [X:]\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM, where [X:] is the drive letter of the problematic Windows system partition.
  4. Assign a name for the loaded hive, such as MyWin.
  5. The key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyWin will appear. You will see subkeys like ControlSet001, ControlSet002, etc. Here, we use ControlSet00X to represent these subkeys. You need to check and modify all applicable subkeys as described below.
  6. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyWin\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}. In the right pane, find the name LowerFilters and remove FancyCcV from its data.
  7. For Windows Server operating systems, also navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyWin\ControlSet00X\Control\Class\{cc342e67-bd5b-4dd2-bb7b-bf23cf9f2a0e} and perform the same operation described in Step 6.
  8. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyWin\ControlSet00X\Services and delete the entire subkey named FancyCcV.
  9. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyWin, click File -> Unload Hive... from the menu, and then exit the Registry Editor.
  10. Exit Windows RE, or reinstall the drive into the original computer, and then restart the computer.
  11. Once you have successfully booted into the system, you can proceed to uninstall or reinstall PrimoCache.
